"Diptych – collage with two of the most famous poems by Giacomo Leopardi, To Himself and The Infinite, made from pages of old books."
"The Infinite"
Always dear to me was this solitary hill,
And this hedge, which from so much part
Of the ultimate horizon the view excludes.
But sitting and gazing, endless
Spaces beyond it, and superhuman
Silences, and deepest quiet
I in thought pretend to myself; where almost

"To Himself"
by Giacomo Leopardi

Now you will rest forever,
Tired heart. The last illusion is dead
Which I believed eternal. Dead. I sense
Within us both not only
The hope, but even the desire, is extinguished.
Rest forever.
You have trembled enough. Nothing deserves
Your heartbeats.
No longer is it worth
To beat. The earth is nothing
But dust.
Life is bitter and weary,
And the world is nothing else.
Be still.
Despair for the last time.
To our species, Fate
Gave only death.
Now despise yourself,
Nature, the wicked
Power that secretly
Rules the common ruin,
And the infinite vanity of everything.

My heart is overwhelmed with awe.
And as I hear the wind rustle
Among the leaves, I compare
That infinite silence to this voice:
And I remember the eternal,
And the dead seasons, and the living
One, and the sound of it. So,
In this immensity is drowned
My thought:
And to shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea.
The paper of the artwork is white!
For me, the act of painting begins when words fall silent.
I cannot say much about my paintings, except that they come from a vision — something I see,
and therefore, I paint.
Often, these visions arise from reading poetry.
I do not know why I see what I see — that’s why I paint:
to allow others to see what I see.
And through their visions and words,
I often come to understand better what I have painted.
